Taste of Innovation 2012 Recap

For this year’s Taste of Innovation, a slew of the tastiest restauranteurs in Columbus were kind enough to donate their delicacies and services to Innovation Fisher on February 9th. Betty’s, Dirty Frank’s Hot Dog Palace, The Jury Room, Piada and Tip Top Kitchen provided a feast of entrees and small plates to the event. The Cheesy Truck donated a VIP Pass that  gave a very, very lucky winner (who may or may not be one very, very lucky IF member Neal Wagner) a VIP Pass for half off all items on the menu. And yes, that totally includes the cavier masterpiece, the Jackie O. Due Amici also pitched in a gift certificate. So a special thanks to all the very, very generous donators (we’re looking at you Liz Lessner and Kevin Crowley) who made this another top-notch event.

The night was punctuated with a Keynote from Kevin Malhame, the founder of such luminary dining destinations as Northstar Cafe and Third & Hollywood. With an emphasis on local, organic food and inspired management, Kevin delivered an intriguing look at how he combined social responsibility and culinary excellence into a Columbus institution. See his speech below.

Taste of Innovation

It’s time to purchase your ticket(s) to Taste of Innovation, Thursday, Feb. 9, 7:30pm – 9:30pm @ Mason Hall Rotunda (2nd floor) – http://goo.gl/OwCB0.

Taste of Innovation is Innovation Fisher’s second annual fundraiser to benefit its Spring Innovation Summit (4/20/2012). Last year’s pioneering event was a huge success, allowing winning bidders of the limited number of seats to socialize with Columbus’ innovative food minds while sampling various cuisines through the donations of our partner establishments.

We’ve made a number of improvements to this year’s event:

  • Evening event instead of lunchtime so significant others can attend.
  • No more complicated bidding process with a $20 minimum bid. This year’s flat price is $15.
  • Goal for Zero Waste event.
  • Partner restaurant gift cards will be raffled off, including a one-year VIP Membership (half off anything, all the time) to The Cheesy Truck food truck. Special thanks to Due Amici for also raffling gift cards and to Piada for being our only food and gift card donor.
  • A keynote by Northstar Café and Third & Hollywood Owner Kevin Malhame. Northstar Café was recently named to Gourmet Live’s list of the 10 healthiest restaurants in the nation.

For the complete list of partner establishments, see the flyer below:

Site Visit to Lextant Recap

On January 6th, Innovation Fisher members began their 2012 with a visit to Lextant, a design research and user experience design firm located in Columbus. While there, IF’ers took a tour of Lextant’s facilities and enjoyed an engaging dialogue with Chris Rockwell, the founder and president of Lextant.

One highlight of the visit was IF member Zach Friedman trying out his driving chops on a simulator that measures what effects automotive control panel designs may have on distracted driving. This simulator is only one of many tools and methods Lextant uses to understand what drives customer behavior and how companies can use this data for meaningful design. All IF members left this visit with new ideas about design research and how that research can give insights into the experiences consumers desire.

A special thank you to Chris for generously hosting our group!

IF Social Celebrates New Members

Innovation Fisher kicked off its programming with the annual Innovation Social on October 28th, attended by the Professor Chairs Bills & Leiblein, the executive team and members new and veteran. Former IF’ers Dave Shaw and Jeremy Jacobs (now at Resource Interactive) and 2010 IF President Shay Merritte even joined the fun. Festivities started with a tour at Watershed Distillery, a local artisan producer of gin and vodka that began operations a year and a half ago. Co-owner Dave Rigo guided students through the Grandview distillery  while laying out the basics of starting your own spirits company from scratch. An prime example of inspired innovators and innovation in Columbus, Rigo and co-owner Greg Lehman started their project by exploring ways to create a new gin recipe that evolved past the antiquated juniper berry (i.e. Christmas-Tree Taste) aesthetic that has isolated the cocktail  from younger connoisseurs. The pair created a savory blend of citrus and pepper for its trademark spirit instead, leading Watershed to become the most popular liquor producer in Columbus. Judging by the samples that IF tried, we’re not surprised.

After the tour, the team headed to Brazenhead Irish Pub a few blocks over to engage in further merriment with the cozy restaurant’s mix of imported brew and tasty appetizers. Judging by feedback, the event confirmed Innovation Fisher as the best student organization in the history of education and  a pivotal junction in the lives of the new IF members.

“Next to my birth, it was probably the most influential day of my life,” remarked more than one first-year IF Member. The Executive Team couldn’t agree more.
